Hidden Danger of The Doughnut Tree Game, What Parade's Pippa Middleton Article Didn't Tell You

I enjoy getting the Sunday paper. It's such a great way to start the day, relax with coffee, clip coupons or check out sales and plan out my week, but today the cover of Parade caught my eye and not in a good way. When they had a wonderful picture of Pippa Middleton and a child playing the game doughnuts on a string or as they call it "The Doughnut Tree". See pics below:

Just seeing the picture, reminded my of an email I received many years ago warning about the chocking hazard of the game "Doughnuts on a String" as children race to be the first person to finish a doughnut.

Email noted that the angle of the head and race to consume  doughnut as fast as possible is a dangerous combination that increases the risk of choking.

While I am not a fan of the Doughnut Tree game, I don't mind that they list how to play "The Doughnut Tree" game in the magazine.

The Problem I have with it is:
They FAILED to Mention or even warn they this could be a CHOKING HAZARD!

While this game has been played at many parties over the years without any problems, it is one game that does have a history of causing choking. My concern is that many Parade readers will see this and think, "What a fun idea, let's do this game for Halloween," without being aware of the danger.

At the least Parade should have included a warning for the The Doughnut Tree like; "Not recommend for children under 5 years old as the game may present a choking hazard. Parent / Adult supervision required."

And since they didn't I just did.

After years of writing and creating party games for kids, it is never a good thing to mix young children like the one shown in the picture in a game situation where you may be encouraged to eat food at a strange angle as fast as he or she can to win a contest. Just eating a doughnut with your hands is hard enough, why make it a race that just increases the risk of choking.

At Party Game Ideas, we know party games can be a challenge and risks are involved however we try to place a warning or note concerns to the games so the user can decide whether the party game might be right for them.

While I do give Parade Magazine a Thumbs Up for the Pippa Middleton interview, they get a Thumbs Down for not properly informing their audience of the Real Dangers of the Doughnut Tree game.

Halloween Bowling - Be Creative for Halloween Fun

I don't know how I come up with these game ideas, but while replacing the paper towels it hit me.

Paper Towels would make excellent bowling pins for Pumpkin Bowling, while I recommend using play bowling pins or 2 liter soda bottles this idea comes in handy if you don't have those items. Plus, the paper towels will be used in the future so you are not wasting anything.

And to make sure you don't ruin the towels you can print out Halloween pumpkins faces from the internet and simply tape them on for game play. Then once the game is over just remove the Halloween faces and they are ready for cleaning up spills.

Yes, my ideas are sometimes strange like Jello Halloween Centerpieces or Candy Corn Lighting but it's fun and creative uses for things I already have around my house.

Here are the Pumpkin Bowling Photos - I thought you might like.

Don't Let Hurricane Sandy Ruin Your Halloween Party, Our Party Checklist Will Keep You on Track

It never hurts to be prepared, when hosting a Halloween or any event and based on the weather forecast for the Northeast it is time to have a Halloween Party Plan Checklist in case the weather turns frightful..

With Hurricane Sandy and a strong cold front, the Halloween weather forecast looks downright scary for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and maybe even Halloween!

With that being noted, if you live in the Northeast and have outdoor Halloween events and activities planned, you need to be prepared with alternative Halloween games and party activities.

Halloween Party Bad Weather Checklist
1. If you need to move activities inside, is there room for everyone?
While not everyone can fit in 1 room, consider multiple areas and determine whether your garage or basement could work to handle overflow. Garages often provide space, but if you plan on using it, now is the time to plan a Saturday clean up.

If you still don't have enough space, then consider a location back up plan. Talk over options with friends and be ready to take action and announce changes so that everyone gets notified via text or phone call hours in advance of your event. While it is not recommended for children's parties, last minute changes tend to be ok for teenager Halloween parties.

2. Should You Change the Date of your Halloween Event?
If the weather turns really nasty where power outages are reported in your area and / or guests may be in danger due to flash floods then you need to consider cancelling or postponing moving your Halloween party. There is no reason to put guests in danger.

3. Prepare Decorations, Party Supplies & Food
Since weather can be hit or miss (ie if #HurricaneSandy heads out to the Atlantic rather than towards land) and storm paths can often change course, place and box decorations, party supplies and food so it is ready to go outside if the weather is good or inside if bad. Basically, you want everything together and organized so you can quickly set up indoors or outdoors if needed.

4. Clean!
Yep, when you thought everyone would be outside there was no concern over cleaning the house. However with a small army of zombies, witches and superheros in your house, it is time to get prepared and dust, vacuum and sweep. Also it is does rain, make sure you have one or more door mats ready to make the sure the water and mud from outside doesn't end up tracked all over your house.

5. Halloween Activities and Party Games, What Now?
If you were planning a Pumpkin Hunt, Halloween Scavenger Hunt or outdoor game, can you move it inside? And do you have the room to play it? You'll have to be creative to come up with teen Halloween games, but for younger kids you can often adapt outdoor Halloween games indoor or replace them with printable games  and simple challenges. Check out our Halloween games list by age to see what options might work. The key is not to panic but to review ideas today, so that you aren't caught off guard if bad weather hits.

Right now the forecast is for Hurricane Sandy and this cold front to cause problems from Sunday through Wednesday with wind, high surge and rain. Many people love Halloween and the parties that go with the holiday, but remember safety first. To all my friends in the Northeast stay dry, safe and warm.

Spooky Halloween House Decorations Pictures from Our Neighborhood

Halloween is a week away and last night I was able to head out and one of my communities favorite neighborhoods to see what they are doing for Halloween.

While not every house decorates fro Halloween there are a few that really do wonderful Halloween decorations. The only down side to walking and taking pictures at sunset is that you can only visit a few house to take good pictures while walking.

What I really enjoy about Halloween house decorations is that while you can admire large, elaborate displays , sometimes simple items with jsut a few key accents look wonderful in a yard or entryway.

These homes have created a wonderful Halloween displays in our neighborhood and I am grateful, because I can't put up Halloween decorations.

Here are my Halloween House Decorations from my walk last night. Want to purchase spooky Halloween decorations like these visit our Halloween Decorations page at Party Game Ideas.

Jello Halloween Centerpiece Idea - Easy, Fun and Colorful

Hosting a Halloween Party and want an easy and colorful Halloween Centerpiece?

We thought about using jars, water, adding coloring and then placing the items inside, but several of the items floated to the top and we once the lid was on the mason jar you really couldn't see the eyeballs we placed inside.

However you could see them if you picked up the jar and turned it in your hands, then it looked pretty cool, but we wanted a Halloween Centerpiece that would look cool and not be touched or picked up by guests.

Then the idea hit me, what about Jello!

It's colorful, should hold things in place and allow light to seep through offering a cool glow.

So I headed to the store and picked up orange and green jello mixes.

Once home I gather up items I felt would create a spooky scene, while keeping it simple.
a. Tall glassware to give the centerpiece height
b. Plastic spider that sank in water
c. Squishy eyeballs leftover from a party game idea
d. Orange Jello

From there I set out to create 3 different scenes in each of the glasses, for this example. a. In glass 1, I placed a spider at the bottom and let the eyeballs bunch at the top and placed a spider on top them. b. Glass 2 - A spider and eyeball were at the bottom and more eyes further up near the top of the glass. c. Glass 3 included a spider at the bottom and several layers of eyeballs.

The trick it to let the Jello start to thicken so that the eyeball (which floats) would be held be the Jello and then add layer upon layer until you have completed your glass.

One idea that came to after I completed this process was that I could have used thread and a needle to go through several eyeballs and then tied the thread securely to stones or glass beads and place them at the bottom of the glass. Then position the spider like the string is its web. It might be an option worth trying.

Once complete, you have a cool look from all angle and an item that can be back-lite with flameless candles to create your Halloween Centerpiece. This Halloween picture shows each side of our glasses.

Once you have finished making the Jello centerpieces, store them in the refrigerator and remove about 30 minutes before guests arrive and let them sit on the counter.

As the Jello warms to room temperature, condensation will form on the glass. After about 30 minutes, you should be safe to wipe off the condensation and then wait another 2 - 3 minutes to make you got it all. Once the condensation is gone you are ready to place your Halloween Centerpiece and add your accent lights or flameless candles. (I like using them because they are safe and the glow is soft.)

Add in Halloween decorations and tableware to create your own unique Jello Halloween Centerpiece!

Nightmare Halloween Costume Adventure - The Endless Search for Elusive Costumes

It all started innocently enough.

At 1:25 pm - I asked my adult son what do you want to be for Halloween? The reply seemed simple, an Assassin's Creed costume or this "Robin Hood" costume that looks like an assassin.

I said great, I will swing by the one of the Halloween stores and pick it up.

Then Came More Information & Rules:
1. There are several Assassin's Creed costumes so this one and if not this then Robin Hood
2. Make sure we can return it if it doesn't fit
3. Look for it in the video game or renaissance section

Ok, got it.
Normally I would insist they come along but d he would soon have to head into work. It seemed like an easy task and I was up for this pretty standard challenge.

By 1:50 pm - I gathered up Halloween store coupons and headed out.

First Stop: Party City Store #1 - Time: 2:10 pm
- No Assassin's Creed, but Robin Hood costume in the right size.
- Decision: Since this was the 1st store, I can check the 2 other stores and return if needed. No Purchase Made

Second Stop: Spirit Halloween - Time 2:35 pm
- Poorly Organized, but No Assassin's Creed and No Robin Hood

Third Stop: Halloween City - Time 3: 25 pm
- Chaotic Arrangement, but no Assassin's Creed but found 1 Robin Hood in the correct size
- Decision: I had a Coupon for Party City $10 off and the line was over 10 people long. I will head back to Party City, save $10 and be done.

Fourth Stop: Party City Store #1 - Time 3:55 pm
- Head to the costumes, get a salesperson to assist me, walk over to the costume to place the order and the LG Costume Size Sticker has been removed! They Sold It since I was last in the store.
- Decision: Return to Halloween City and purchase the costume. Yes, but I want to save $10. So I use my phone to check the web site and yes there is a $10 coupon but I need to print it. Ok, running home and printing it will take 10 minutes. Let's do it.

Fifth Stop: Halloween City - Time 4: 15 pm
- I return to Halloween City with coupon in hand and I head right to where the Robin Hood costume was and... it's not there. I look around and I don't see it. I ask the attendant at the dressing room if anyone tried it on and they say no. I want to kick myself, I hand it in my hands but for $10 I didn't take action. I leave the store.

Now Frustrated and Angry, I am upset that my thriftiness cost me a costume, but now I am more determined than ever to find the requested costume.

Now I call another Party City store and Success they have the Robin Hood costume in the Size I want and it is placed on hold. I have the Halloween Costume Success is Mine!

Sixth Stop: Party City Store #2 Time: 4:50 pm
- I arrive at Party City and head to the costume pick up area and they tell me that my costume is at the front of the store at check out. perfect.
- I wait in line patiently and finally after it's my turn. I tell them my name and the costume. The clerk checks the items set aside for customers and returns with a Woman's Sexy Robin costume!
- I said that this is not the right costume they said they were holding Robin Hood for me. She looked around and with a take it or leave it look said "This is all we have for you. You can check in the back for Robin Hood." Inside I am fuming, outside I just said ok and headed to the back.
- I check and No Assassin's Creed or Lg Robin Hood

Time 5:20 I do a Google Maps Search and Find 2 Halloween Stores within 5 miles and call the 1st temporary Halloween Store and ask if they have either of the costumes I am looking for the answer. The answer "We may have them." I asked her what that meant and she said "We have a lot of costumes and we may have those, there isn't a way for me to check. So it's better if you just come to the store."

Well Thanks for nothing. After that heartfelt conversation, I decided I would visit Halloween Megastore. It sounded big and was 3 miles away, so off I went.

Seventh Stop: Halloween Megastore - Time 5:30 pm
- Success I found 4 Assassin's Creed costumes! Who cares about Robin Hood now. Victory will be mine.
- After reviewing them, the sizes looked hit or miss and the price was $30 more than online.
- However, I was ready to purchase a $150 costume when I asked "What is the Return Policy?"
- If you buy it you can exchange it or get store credit.
- The fear of purchasing the wrong size and then returning tomorrow to discover they sold out of the other sizes, stopped me in my tracks and I had to walk away with nothing.

Eighth Stop: Home 6:15 pm
- Finally at home, I was frustrated, anger and a little bitter than I had accomplished nothing all afternoon and I became so focused on finding this costume, I didn't even run my own errand!

After calming down and doing some research online I found what I thought was the costume and but need the one person who was at work to confirm it because I had viewed to many costumes to remember which was the preferred design. In the end, I called it a night and went to bed early.

This Morning
Over breakfast, I reviewed may day and how a favor turned into a nightmarish quest that remained unfilled. He pulled up the Assassin's Creed costumes online and I noted the one I almost bought for $150 and his response was "I didn't want that one, I want this one."

For the first time since I left the house yesterday, I felt a little sigh of relief. I didn't spend $150 on a costume he didn't want (even though he would pay for it).

And it got better!
We found the costume he wanted, it was $130 and 35% Off. We added 2 day shipping and it was still under $95!

Here is what I learned:
1. If you find the costume and can return it. Buy It!
- If you find something better return it the same day.
2. Ask they accept competitor's coupons or will allow you to use the web site coupon via your phone?
- It never hurts to ask!
3. If you know what you want, shop online first. Use codes and if needed pay extra to get your costume on time.
- FYI - Always Confirm (Click On) Shipping before finalizing the sale. I learned the hard way today and had to cancel an order when the default shipping was everyday standard and the Free promo would have it to my house by Friday. Just to be safe I upgraded to 2 day.

While My Halloween Costume Adventure Started as a Nightmare, it ended up a success story.
1. I didn't buy the wrong costume and lose $150
2. We ended up saving $55 off the store price.

I hope you don't have such a daunting tail to tell while looking for Halloween costumes and recommend checking out Buy Costumes (banner below) a good store where we found what we wanted.

Zombie Old Halloween Costumes for a New Walking Dead Look

Struggling to come up with a new Halloween costumes this year?

Well we have an idea Zombify Old Halloween Costumes! Turn that old costume into new costume by making it a zombie.

The Walking Dead is huge and let's face it according to the Walking Dead people who were once alive are now most likely dead. So you can take just about any costume you never plan to wear again and zombify it. Fireman, Witch, Officer, Prisoner, Monk, Clowns and more.

To turn an old Halloween costumes into a zombie costume you should do the following:
a. Add rips and cuts to the clothing (Zombies would  have done this to you.)
b. You'll need scratches, scars, wound marks and zombie makeup for your face
c. Dirty up the costume with blood (red dye) and fray the sleeves and pant legs.

Get more ideas by reviewing zombie costumes.

Here are a few photo examples where they added a zombie face to the costume:

Lady Gaga as a Zombie

We like Lady Gaga but are you going to wear this again? But you can take any celebrity's costume and turn it into a zombie. Any just check your closets and see you is hiding in there and then take action.

Next Zombie Captain America
Yes we all know that Captain America should be able to survive a zombie attack but it only takes one bite or scratch to become infected! And if just one Superhero got bit, then it might be over for the entire group. Now we did see some Zombie Robin and Batman costumes that were produced for Halloween and we even saw a Zombie Storm Troopers (How did zombies get to outer space?) so pretty much the sky is the limit.

We found these recycled zombie costumes at Zomboween.com and thought that it was a good idea. We asked them if we could reuse some of the images and they said yes as long as linked back to their web page where the have a few other recycled zombie Halloween costume ideas.

Dollar Store Halloween Party Game Challenge Completed!

The Challenge: Go to the Dollar Store and Target and find mostly $1 items that can be turned into party games for Halloween.

While we had high expectations, we also had a few rules.
1. We could not purchase a ready to go Halloween Party Game
2. Try to keep the total out of pocket expense for any one game from $1 to $10

We ended up purchasing 5 Halloween items from which to create our party games.
1. Reflective Halloween Stickers
2. Gross Gummy Body Parts
3. Colorful Halloween Containers
4. Vampire Teeth
5. Squishy Eyeballs

The result is the Dollar Store Halloween Party Game Challenge below:

Here is what the learned from our challenge:
1. Once you have an party game idea, it doesn't always work. We really thought the game Skeleton Eyeball Toss, where you throw the eyeball at the skeleton's head, would work. However after we could get them off our finger without really working at it and one ended stuck to the ceiling, we knew our game idea could be a disaster. Plus I feared pets would try to eat the eyeballs and that would be a disaster. We still like the idea of Pin the Eye on the Skeleton, but just not with squishy eyeballs. Finally, as a result we changed the eyeball game to an eyeball drop.

2. DIY games can take time. Creating a graveyard target game takes time and reflecting on cutting through cardboard and the additional work, our sample took over an hour. One thought after we completed this was to consider using a piece of wood and hole saw drill bit to cut the holes if this is an option. Then you could add length to the game by lining up another board, so there is distance between the holes and rolling the ping pong ball becomes a challenge. Plus once you create a master board you can use it again for rolling or tossing games. However this would also break the $10 rule.

3. Crafting items and ping pong balls are useful accessories. Let's face it, if you already have paper, markers and a glue gun, you'll have more options than if you need to buy them.

4. Sometimes a Ready to Go Halloween Party Game will cost less! Yes, I said it. If you can pick up a ready to play out of the box game or a printable Halloween game that takes less than 15 minutes to set up, it could be worth it if you don't have the time. The trip to the store, purchase, planning and extras took a few hours, while it was fun consider whether you have 2 hours to work on a diy Halloween party game or if it is easier to spend $5 - $20 for something ready to play.

Overall we really enjoyed the Dollar Store Halloween Challenge and hope you enjoyed coming along for the experience. Several of these games will be making their way onto the Party Game Ideas web site in the Halloween Party Games section.

Quick Halloween Table Lighting Idea that is Easy and Fits any Halloween Party

You want a spooky Halloween table for your guests and to set and eerie mood, but how?

Well we came up with a quick solution to use things that most family's already have: Glasses, Candy Corn and Flameless Candles

Put them together and you add an eerie glow to your Halloween table or add simple Halloween accents, safely to any location.

And we say SAFELY because fake spider webs, gauze and many Halloween costumes with torn fabric pose a risk of catching fire if you use real candles, so for the safety of kids, pets and all your guests flameless candles are a must for Halloween accent lightning.

This Halloween Lighting Idea is simple
:
1. Get glasses or glassware - You can use any glassware but we suggest you keep it simple.
2. Add candy corn as a base to add color
3.Place flameless candles level near the top
4. Fill in the space between the candle and the glass with candy corn

This is perfect for Halloween buffets at the office, the Halloween party snack table and a great way to accent Halloween decorations and displays. Here are some sample photos and video we got using this lighting.

Zombie Gnome

Play around with lighting to see what works best

A Jointed Skeleton makes for a great backdrop in low lighting

This is also a great way to stage photos that you can use on your Facebook, Pinterest and other social media pages. We did a short video on Halloween lighting, it is a little dark but you get the idea.
